Natural Home Remedies for BV

Natural Home Remedies for Bacterial Vaginosis

Natural BV TreatmentThere are many natural remedies for BV, bacterial vaginosis, some you will find very effective in treating your BV infection, others may not work for you. It’s a case of trial an error but in future posts we will discuss ways of preventing recurring BV infections. Simple things you can do to lower your risk of recurring bacterial vaginosis.

Now be warned if you start searching the internet for home remedies for bacterial vaginosis you are going to come across some weird things women are stuffing up their whoo whoo’s.

Personally I do not recommend you go that route. Some things make sense, others simply do not.

Let’s start with the basics. My sister-in-law happens to be a medical doctor and she sees tons of women suffering with cystitis and vaginal infections. I asked her what is the one thing you would tell your patients to do in order to avoid these infections. Her response was water, water and more water!

She said women simply are not drinking enough water! If you increased your fluid intake you greatly reduce your chances of having  a vaginal infection especially a UTI. (urinary tract infection) She also strongly advises we drink cranberry juice. Water and cranberry juice will reduce your risks of infections, our bodies need water to operate efficiently.

Aside from drinking plenty of fluids, here are some natural remedies for bacterial vaginosis.

Again, use common sense when trying these home remedies for BV.

Tea Tree Oil for Bacterial Vaginosis

Tea tree oil is used by some women to cure their BV infection. Tea tree oil is natures antibiotic and has antifungal properties.

It is toxic if taken by mouth! Do not ingest tea tree oil! Do not confuse tea tree oil with tea oil which is used in cooking. Studies have shown tea tree oil is capable of killing MRSA.

Be aware tea tree oil can/may cause an allergic reaction when applied directly to skin.

Take warm baths with 12 drops of tea tree oil every other day.

Some women add tea tree oil to a cotton swab and wipe the vaginal opening.

Douche -50/50 Hydrogen Peroxide or distilled water with 1-2 drops of tea tree oil.

Personally I don’t think douching is the answer as it forces the fluid up into the vagina and may spread the infection into the womb and/or fallopian tubes and can create complications for bv infections.

Natural Yogurt for BV

Natural yogurt contains live cultures (bacteria) that are the good guys. You should eat fresh live yogurt daily. This will help replenish the good bacteria, lactobacillus in your gut and digestive tract. Check the label and make sure it states live cultures.

Natural yogurt can also be inserted into the vagina to replenish the good bacteria. Use a syringe to insert the yogurt at night and shower off in the morning.

Some doctors advise you to dip a tampon in a tub of Greek yogurt and to insert this for up to four hours. Replace as required.

Take a good probiotic

A good probiotic is one that has live cultures and often has to be kept refrigerated.  These are excellent for your whole system and are essential  when you are or have taken a course of antibiotics.

Choose a good, high quality probiotic as these really are the most effective.

Vitamin D3

Most of us could do with adding vitamin D3 to our daily intake. Vitamin D3 has some amazing health benefits besides building strong bones and tissue.

Lack of D3 has been thought to allow infections and illness to occur.

1,000 mg a day is sufficient, during a BV infection you can easily double or triple this amount.

I take 4,000mg daily as I was found to be deficient on a recent blood test. How many people actually get tested for this?

Garlic for BVGarlic was always my mother’s answer for all infections. Natures antibiotic garlic has some wondrous healing properties.

You can either eat garlic whole or in capsule form, even odorless garlic capsules are very effective.

Again for those that wish to try (desperate times calls for desperate measures!) garlic can be inserted into the vagina for an effective cure for bacterial vaginosis.

Take a clove of peeled garlic, slice incisions into the clove to release the juices and insert into the vagina.

Now again I do not advocate inserting objects into the vagina! My worry would be what happens if this fails to come out! It would be humiliating to have to go to your doctors to have him find a clove of garlic in your whoo whoo LOL But women have used this method and swear by it as a home remedy for bacterial vaginosis.

I do however highly recommend eating fresh garlic cloves daily or the capsule form. Garlic is also excellent for cardiovascular health.

Take a good, high quality multi-vitamin daily.

BV is a complete pain in the…well…you know. I used to get it about times a year, usually after I had gotten a sinus infection, treated it with antibiotics, then got a yeast infection, and treated that with medication. It was a roller coaster ride of meds and ointment. Nobody wants to go to that place, but there I was.

I also have Crohn’s Disease, which made matters even worse because of all the meds I’m on for that combined with the bizarre list of foods I can and can’t eat. Finally, I decided that I’d had enough. I was tired of feeling like crap and all the drama that went with it. I talked to my doctor and we worked out that the Paleo Diet was a good fit for me. As soon as I cut refined sugar and gluten out of my diet I noticed changes. I’ve been eating this way for about 6 months now, and I have not had BV or a yeast infection since.

Obviously, this lifestyle change isn’t a good fit for everyone, but I do think that if you are having a revolving door of BV and Yeast infections that cutting refined sugar out of your diet is the best thing you can do for long term relief.

It is difficult coping with a BV infection at any time however when coupled with other conditions such as Crohn’s disease, fibromyalgia, lupus etc then it just adds to the overall misery and can make life unbearable.
